Oct 26,2022 | YAOAWE
When you are smoking a pork shoulder and your Masterbuilt smoker stops working. The digital display functioned fine but the element won't heat up, then it could be that you have a problem with the heating original. In the article we show how to restore your Masterbuilt smoker, which is actually quite simple and only takes 15 minutes to complete.
My electric smoker doesn't heat up, at first it wasn't hot enough. And now, it's not up to temperature, it's not actually getting hot, so when I go to set it up there's no heat generated, You can even touch the heating element and see that it's not getting hot.
The steps to solve the non-heating problem are almost identical. There are just 2 reasons why the average smoker's heater element doesn't work:
- The terminal end which gets plugged into the heating element is either burned or melted completely.
- And your heating element is completely damaged.
First we check the electrical connections on the outside back of the unit:
- Remove screws
- Remove panel
- Inspect connections
If you find that the connection has been corroded to a great extent. If the connector on the heating element breaks when you try to pull the wire, then you need to replace Heater element connector.
If the connector terminals are not burnt or melted, then we use a multimeter to check the resistance of the heating element.
The resistance reading of our heating element should be:
- 18 ohms for the 800W element (30" smoker)
- 12 ohms for the 1,200W element (40" smoker)
TIP: If the heating element is not faulty, but the terminal plugged into the heating element is burnt and melted, it is best to replace the terminal and the element together.
Here we start removing and replacing the Heating Elements.
Before you start working,be sure you smoker is unplugged.
- Disassembling the smoker
- Removing the ash tray
- Remove Chip Tray
- Remove rubber gasket
- Testing the new Element
- To install the new terminals, you simply cut off the old terminals, strip the wires and press on the new spade terminals with a crimper.
- Reinstallation of heating elements
- Reinstall wood chip box and ash pan
After replacing it you could open the smoker and check that it is normal and we can start smoking.
