Clearing And Replace Your Jammed Auger On Your Traeger Grill

    Apr 25,2022 | YAOAWE

When your Traeger controller turns on. However, after setting a temperature you don’t see any grill pellets entering the firepot. Now, while the motor its self could have potentially failed you first need to check the auger is not blocked/jammed.
When hardwood pellets aren’t being fed into the Firepot, the auger may be jammed. Pellets that get wet expand and can cause the auger to lock up and stop turning.
You could open the grill to see if the Auger is rotating, if the Auger does not rotate, it is the auger have become jammed.

So when an auger gets stuck, let's get in there and clear it.

    • Disconnect your power, don't forget that could fry the controller.
    • The first step to clearing out an auger is definitely emptying out your pellets.Because we got to take this metal shielding off the assembly so we're going to dump the pellets.
    • If you want to keep your area real clean, then vacuum up the remaining particles, sawdust and ashes.
    • Remove the temperature Controller from the hopper with a Phillips head screwdriver. Turn the controller sideways and push it back into the mounting hole of the hopper.
    • Remove the hopper from the grill. Remove the 2 screws on the front and 2 on the back where the hopper attaches to the grill. Set the hopper aside.
    • Unscrew the shear pin that holds the Auger Motor to the shaft, hold the nut with pliers and unscrew the pin with an Allen key.
    • Pull the motor off the auger shaft and set aside.Remove the bushing from the shaft with a Phillips screwdriver.(Motor removal can be tougher and you can turn the motor fan to relieve the tension.)
    • Pull the auger from the shaft by wiggling it side to side. If it gets stuck, you can tap it with a hammer and then rotating the auger backwards.
    • Repeatedly rotate the auger several times to clear the clogged pellets out of the auger shaft.(Or use a wooden paint stick or handle of a tool)
    • Scrape the lodged pellets loose. Vacuum all of the pellets, sawdust, and ash from the auger shaft and firepot.

After you have removed the jammed auger and cleaned the auger tube. There is no rush to put the auger back into the pellet grill. Check its condition, is the auger heavily corroded/rusty or even bent?
The events which led to the auger becoming blocked in the first place (foreign object/wet pellets) can in some cases also damage the auger.
If you are concerned about the condition of the auger, you can Replace the Auger.
It is important to note that you must purchase the correct length auger for your particular Traeger pellet grill. Therefore, please measure your old auger before ordering a new one.

Here’s how to install a Traeger auger:

    • Place the replacement auger into the shaft and test it to ensure it turns freely.
    • Put the motor bracket/Bushing on the end of the auger and push it into the shaft, alignment position, then secure the auger with the 7/16” screw.
    • Attach the auger motor to the auger with the 5/16” Allen nut and screw.
    • Attach the hopper to the grill and secure the temperature controller to the front of the hopper.
