Troubleshooting your Char-Griller Gravity Fed 980 Charcoal Grill

    Apr 20,2022 | YAOAWE

The Char-Griller 980 gravity smoker with over 980 square inches of cooking space, get the unmatched flavor and versatility of charcoal in a fraction of the time. But recently I've been getting a lot of questions about the Char-Griller 980 gravity smoker.
So in the following article summarizes some error codes that you may encounter when using the brand new Char-Griller Griller Fed 980 Charcoal Grill and how to resolve them.

1、Why does the Error Code of ErU Appear?

That actually is telling you that your grill has the incorrect voltage or has a power supply failure.

    Solutions:

    • Incorrect Voltage detected if using the wrong power adapter. Check if using the supplied power adapter or for malfunction of power adapter
    • If error code persists, you may need to replace your fan

2、Why does the Error Code of ErH Appear?

When you see ErH displayed on here the grill is thinking that the temperature has exceeded 750°F.

    Solutions:

    • Immediately unplug the grilleand open it up to hopefully quickly let it cool down
    • Check for Cause of the overheat: Fan malfunction or grease fire
    • Check your fan to make sure that it is spinning freely and that nothing is in its way
    • Empty that grease pan and make sure you do it after every cook
    • Wipe the temperature probe and make sure it's reading the correctly
    • Plug Grill in to clear message

3、Error Code ErF Appears, How To Resolve Them?

The control board shows ErF which means your fan is not currently working.

    Solutions:

    • Unplugged it, plugged it back in and dialed up 10 degrees to see if the fan would kick on
    • Unplug the grill power supply.Check the connection of the fan unit at both the controller and fan. Then plug the grill power supply back in
    • Check to make sure no ashes or debris are blocking the fan / stuck in the fan.Clean up the charcoal or little piece in the fan
    • If the fan is burned out, you need to replace the fan

4、Error Code ErR/ErP Appears, How To Resolve Them?

    • Meat probes over 300 °F or meat probe is not fully inserted. You must reinsert to ensure that the meat probe is properly inserted into the food
    • Dirty meat probe and internal temp probe, cleaned with a damp rag and try to keep them clean
    • Check the Connection of the main temperature Probe. Unplug the Connection, and then reconnect. Then Unplug the grill and plug back in
    • If error code persists, you may need to replace your probe

5、Why is the Fan not Running?

    • The Grill temperature has reached its temperature goal
    •  The Hopper or Ash Door Lid are open. For safety, the Hopper and Ash Doors are equipped with shut off switches if either of these doors are opened. Closing the doors will return the grill to normal operation
    • The fan has been disconnected from the controller
    • The fan has been disconnected from wiring harness
    • Hopper Lid or Ash door switches have been disconnected

6、Error Code OPEN Appears, How To Resolve Them?

    • Verify that OPEN goes away when both doors(Ash Door and/or Hopper) are completely shut and latched
    • If OPEN persists, unplug the grill power supply
    • Check the connection on the back of the hopper to verify the door switches are fully plugged in and not reversed
    • Plug the grill power supply back in
    • If error persists, replace door switches

I replaced the fan and still get the erf code. It will run for 5 seconds and shut off. I have checked all of the wiring. Any ideas? Is the controller bad??

Hi, I have had my char grilled 980 for about 1 year. Today I set the temp to cook at 275. Two hours later when I checked it it was at 390. I threw away the meat, unplugged it reset it and tried to see if that corrected the problem. It overheated again. I get no error code, the gasket is fine, the vent is open, grease trap is clean. I am using Kingsford briquettes. Nothing in the FAQ seems to address it. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks Tom
